World Class Sailing Regatta Coming to Montenegro!

10 -14 April 2019 - Tivat Bay

The Porto Montenegro Yacht Club is pleased to be involved in the RC44 Championship Tour, which will kick-off the 2019 season in Montenegro.

The Boka Bay in Montenegro suits this boat perfectly, and crews won’t be disappointed either. The crew of each RC44 is made up of a 50/50 split between professional sailors, with America’s Cup and Olympic medalist status, and amateurs, with the amateur owner always at the helm. The tour also gives an opportunity for a VIP guest to sit at the back of the boats, with the perfect view of all the action. This is a winning formula and one that has seen these boats and their crew tour across the world.

The racing format involves 3-4 x 35-min races per day over 5 days of racing. Other race hosts include Porto Cervo, Sotogrande and Cascais. A total of 10 international teams include 80 world-class sailors representing 15 nations.

SailGP - a new racing series starting in Sydney, February 2019

The new SailGP is re-defining the sport of sailing. As a completely new global sports series featuring bold, cutting-edge technology and awe-inspiring athleticism, SailGP puts the fan at the centre of the sport.

The racing takes place in some of the world’s most iconic city waterfronts, where athletes from rival nations will race head-to-head on the newly redefined F50 wingsailed catamarans, which fly above the water on wave-piercing hydrofoils at speeds of over 50 knots (60 mph). The boats are engineered to be identical in every respect, designed to produce close, heart-stopping racing, with advanced audio/visual technology producing an “on board” fan experience.

The sailors – world champions, Olympic medalists, America’s Cup winners – represent the best young talent their nations have produced.

The media technology developed to bring the story from the water to the race fan is the most advanced in the sport.

Itaji, Brazil - next stop for the Volvo Ocean Race (ETA 6 April)

This will complete the hat-trick for Itajaí as the Volvo Ocean Race Brazilian stopover.  Prepare for a carnival atmosphere!  The Brazilian fans are crazy about the race, and the country has a long history of welcoming the boats. Itajaí first hosted the event in 2011-12, when over a quarter of a million people visited the Race Village. Considering that the city only has a population of two hundred thousand, – that’s a good reason to come back!

Itajaí is in the south of Brazil, on the north coast of Santa Catarina State.  It’s positioned about 100 kms north of the state capital of Florianopolis. More importantly, it marks the end of the big Southern Ocean challenge and the first port of call after the boats have rounded Cape Horn. After racing thousands of miles through the planet’s frozen wastes, the first boat into Itajaí will get some serious kudos – and a very welcome tray of the local Caipirinhas.

This is one of the coolest beach and surf spots on the planet.  If you’ve never experienced Brazil’s beach culture then this is your chance – it’s a heady mix. Check out Praia de Cabeçudas and Praia Brava, the latter being the better surf spot. If it’s nightlife you’re after, then head to the Warung Beach Club – several times voted as one of the world's best places to dance.
